Spin 2009 |
|
| PDF Score | All of us have
memories of spinning in various guises. I remember as a child
when I could stomach a good spin at the park, hardly able to walk
afterward but joyful from the exhilaration. On numerous occasions
I have enjoyed spinning a coin on a table to see where its
unpredictable path might lead. If the spin of the coin is
disrupted just right, it will come close to toppling and then regain
its balance. Finally, every Easter I find myself spinning eggs:
the ones that spin nicely are hard cooked; the uncooked eggs wobble
awkwardly for a moment or two and stop. These small examples
reflect something more cosmic: we experience the effects of spin in the
rising and setting of the sun, the phases of the moon, the changing
coordinates of the constellations. In this work I attempt to
capture the quirkiness and instability of the tiny spins in our life,
those coins and eggs that, in their own way, are the universe. |
