| Why have I put together this
carillon resource page? I came at the carillon as an undergraduate music student who was very interested in composition. As I began learning to play carillon, I was struck by the beauty of much of the repertory, from works as “old” as those of Van den Gheyn to the works of Roy Hamlin Johnson, Gary White, and other fine composers. I yearned at that time for some way of listening to these great works. It would have made the process of learning some of the more challenging pieces much easier, if not at least more rewarding. As I continued my carillon studies, I also became frustrated at the seemingly limited repertory. Even now, I’m not sure if the repertory is limited, or if much of it just is not physically accessible. In either case, I felt two serious drawbacks to my studies: I had no ready resource to hear much of the body of work I was interested in, and I felt like the limited repertory left something to be desired. The second point I felt like I could do something about – I was destined to compose for a career, and I began, early on, writing extensively for carillon. This website contains an easily accessible repository of all of my carillon works (those which do not fall under external copyright) with recordings where available. I also provide, where possible, links to other scores for carillon works by other composers. I don’t know that I have made any significant contribution, or even a desirable one, but that is beside the point: I simply want to provide more music for the carillon. The first point – availability of recorded material for the standard repertory – I just accepted as status quo. However, although the quality of performance and/or recording may not be great, I hope that in providing this recorded material, students of the carillon can become better acquainted with the repertory – at least that portion of the repertory which I find interesting enough to perform. This website is intended as a long-term dynamic project, one which I will update occasionally, particularly regarding the recorded materials. |
